💰Compensation Range:
Compensation range: $130,000-$165,000. This position is considered exempt under FLSA. This is an estimated pay range. Final pay rate will be determined based on internal salary ranges, job related skills, experience, qualifications, and market conditions.


Job Summary: 
Basis Partners’ Senior Design Engineers are advanced-level engineering professionals who make significant contributions to the success of the Transportation Design Team.  They lead design project teams, with a focus on their design discipline, by guiding, motivating, developing, and advancing the team’s capabilities while also ensuring quality deliverables to our clients.

The Senior Design Engineer’s success depends on their ability to communicate, coordinate, and collaborate at the highest level while having the appropriate level of knowledge to:
  • Take the engineering Roadway Technical Lead role and collaborate with all engineering disciplines.
  • Have authority over design decisions within their focus discipline.
  • Assume the role of Engineer of Record within their focus discipline, if necessary. 
  • Train and provide technical guidance and direction to Design Engineers.
  • Ensure internal and external quality and technical correctness of client deliverables.
  • Proactively identify challenges and potential solutions to aid designs and internal workflows.
  • Accomplish tasks within the budget and schedule constraints set by the Basis Project
    Manager and follow through with high quality output despite possible overruns.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities: 

Generating contract deliverables through planning, structuring, and organizing of projects by:
  • Reviewing contract documents to thoroughly understand the contract deliverables, design costs, design schedule, and expectations of client.
  • Reviewing plans, historical records, sketches, and other relevant documents.
  • Collaborating with the Basis Project Manager on scheduling, hours, and distribution of work amongst Basis Design Engineers and subconsultant to meet project budget and schedule. 
  • Interacting with subconsultants, prime consultants, and the client on design and technical matters.  
  • Advising the Basis Project Manager of potential problems, work interferences, schedule difficulties, etc., and assisting in circumventing/resolving such problems.
Leading design team through production by:
  • Coordinating design development and providing technical direction to other Design Engineers.
  • Delegating tasks to Design Engineers which are appropriate for the individual.
  • Directing and overseeing designers’ work to ensure it meets quality standards, client expectations, and expectations of the Basis Project Manager.
  • Answering questions and providing technical leadership to any stakeholder. 
  • Ensuring all aspects of the design process have been conducted for their focus discipline.
  • Providing review and oversight of the team’s documentation and reports.
  • Ensuring proper oversight and mentorship of the design staff they oversee. 
  • Accomplishing tasks within the budget and schedule constraints set by the Basis Project Manager.
Compiling, organizing, and synthesizing documents, records, and other data to produce client deliverables by:
  • Evaluating Design Engineer’s work and assisting Design Engineers with corrective actions.
  • Verifying design computations that are prepared by the design staff they oversee. 
  • Checking and validating work performed by subconsultants.
  • Ensuring information has been properly documented and saved internally.
  • Leading quality reviews for their design discipline and revisions to ensure compliance with internal and client quality standards periodically throughout production.
  • Conducting Independent Technical Reviews (ITR), Detail Checks (DC), and Independent Discipline Reviews (IDR) and ensuring necessary changes are made. 
  • Inspecting the overall project to ensure plan and execution meets contract deliverables.
  • Scheduling and confirming that Quality Reviews are conducted, in a timely manner, to meet the schedule set by the Basis Project Manager, prior to submittals.
Submitting final deliverables for client review by:
  • Reviewing final deliverables with the Basis Project Manager.
  • Making changes based on feedback.
  • Finalizing package for presentation and submission to client.
Communicating with stakeholders throughout the project by:
  • Preparing and communicating project status reports for their design discipline.
  • Participating in coordination meetings and submittal reviews. 
  • Serving as a client and sub-consultant contact as requested by the Basis Project Manager. 
  • Managing the resolution of design-related issues and tasks.
  • Developing communication and presenting findings, feedback, and recommendations to clients. 
  • Providing technical judgement to consult and solve problems with clients. 
Consulting on issues related to the design analysis by:
  • Identifying and addressing constructability issues.
  • Answering engineering design-related questions throughout construction. 
Advancing design capabilities by:    
  • Identifying and providing strategic direction on emerging technology, value-added solutions, and design best practices. 
  • Recommending, advising, and implementing methods and tools to improve internal design workflows, productivity, and efficiency.
  • Maintaining in-depth and current knowledge base of their engineering design focus.
Developing and mentoring Design Engineers by:
  • Orienting and training new team members.
  • Training, mentoring, guiding, and directing team members.
  • Identifying opportunities to increase the overall team’s design capabilities in technology applications and knowledge of the Senior Design Engineer’s engineering focus discipline.
  • Delegating and following up on tasks assigned to team members.
  • Providing input to Design Engineers performance appraisals and career development.
Assisting in the preparation of project proposals by:
  • Leading portions of proposal and interview development during the procurement process.
  • Preparing conceptual designs, exhibits, reports, estimates, and other technical documents.
  • Identifying value engineering and cost savings opportunities for clients and Basis. 
  • Assisting with the preparation of a scope of work, workhour estimates, cost strategies, and schedule.
  • Collaborating with subconsultants or prime consultants to maximize proposal quality and impact. 
Promoting Basis Partners’ values and reputation by:
  • Interacting with colleagues, clients, contractors, and the public in a professional manner.
  • Collaborating with internal peers to deliver high-quality deliverables with consistency in appearance, detail, ingenuity, and content.
  • Maintaining a safe and clean work environment by:
    • Wearing proper personal protection equipment (PPE) while on project sites.
    • Reporting any unsafe conditions to your manager or any member of management.
    • Actively supporting our safety culture and ensuring integration of quality in relevant processes.
    • Continuously identifying, anticipating, and preventing safety, health, and hazard concerns by surveying environmental, operational, and occupational conditions.
Other duties and responsibilities:
  • Maintaining a productive and team-focused work environment by:
    • Performing other duties as assigned.

  • Maintaining professional and technical knowledge by:
    • Attending relevant training and achieving certifications as required.

    • Working with your direct supervisor or manager to determine developmental needs related to your personal development and Basis Partners’ goals and objectives.
Minimum Qualifications/Experience:
  • 8+ years of relevant Transportation Design experience with increasing responsibility; 10+ years preferred
  • B.S. Civil Engineering Degree
  • P.E. licensure required - Must be able to obtain Colorado PE license withing two months of hire date
Travel:
Occasional travel to job sites, client offices, and other meeting places.
Required to have and maintain a valid driver’s license, appropriate auto insurance coverage (per Basis Vehicle Policy) and an acceptable driving record.
